TORTOLA – Jan. 26, 2017 – O’Neal Webster announces that Partner Vanessa King has been elected Deputy Chair of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners’ (STEP) Caribbean and Latin America Region. She joins Chair Ivan Hooper of Uruguay, Secretary Natalie Glitzenhirn-Augustin of Saint Lucia, and 17 regional committee members in representing the interests and concerns of the region’s approximately 2,000 members across 16 branches and chapters. Ms. King is also the current chair of the STEP BVI branch.
STEP regions, which include Africa and Arabia, Asia, Australasia, Canada, Continental Europe, Switzerland, Crown Dependencies, Caribbean and Latin America, UK and Ireland, and USA, were formed to address significant regional issues, including technical and other matters, such as supranational initiatives affecting international financial centres, and to represent regional interests before STEP’s international leadership bodies. It was the STEP Caribbean and Latin America Regional Committee’s work which led to the dilation of the EU’s proposals to make trust registers compulsory.
The region holds two annual international conferences which consistently attract in excess of 300 delegates. 2017 conference dates include the STEP Caribbean Conference, May 1-3 in Grand Cayman, and the LatAm Conference, September 28-29 in Colombia.
Ms. King is head of O’Neal Webster’s Commercial Department, where her legal practice is focused on the establishment of and issues arising from all forms of BVI trusts; corporate, project, and property finance; joint ventures; corporate restructuring; and general banking and corporate law. Her client base covers the world’s major financial centres and includes leading domestic and international financial institutions, law firms, trust companies, and individuals.
Qualified to practice in the BVI and Jamaica, Ms. King’s expertise is recognized by highly respected ranking bodies, including The Legal500, Chambers and Partners, IFLR1000, and CityWealth IFC. She is the 2016 recipient of the prestigious STEP Founder’s Award, which recognized her outstanding, long term contributions to the organization.
